Hi, it’s Ross from FHG, Australia’s Furniture Solutions Partner.
If you’re a retirement living or aged care facility manager or village manager, the chances are that you may be responsible for selecting furniture for your aged care facility or retirement living village.
The people who would be using this chair will be people who would have limited mobility, risk of falls and then there’s infection control. With some of those things in mind, what should we really be looking for when it comes to selecting dining chairs for a facility of elderly residents whether it’s for retirement living or aged care?
A number of those things, we would show you on a chair like this.
Always have a little piece overhanging here, on the armrest. That enables someone with arthritis or some other condition to have something to hold onto as they push up off the chair. This aids in sit-to-stand transitions. The resident wants to stay mobile for as long as possible and one of those ways is to ensure that they can get out of the chair easily. So this little overhang at the front of the chair is ideal for that and enables them to grip on, hold onto something and to push off. So that is always something to look for when selecting a dining chair in the aged care environment.
The other thing is that sometimes the resident may need assistance in getting pushed or pulled into the table and so this little handle here on the seat back is a great way of having a carer being able to grip the chair and help the resident into the table. Alternatively, helping pull the resident out from the table. Also, for those residents who are more mobile, this is a great way to move the chairs in and out if they are doing it themselves.
One of the other features that over the last 20 years of doing this, we have noticed that some residents tend to slump in their chairs and slide forward. In order to keep their posture, this feature that we’ve come up with in this seat, with a dished seat like so, it helps keep the resident’s posture more upright and helps keep that little bit of friction so should they want to slide forward or slump forward, it actually helps hold them in position while their sitting at the dining room table.
So obviously there are a number of things to think about when selecting furniture for elderly Australians.
